Shelby Plummer, Counseling Intern
It is my belief that, as individuals, we never stop learning, adapting, and growing. I take a non-judgmental, discovery-based, and trauma-informed approach to individuals and couples. As your counselor, it is my mission to walk alongside you on your road to self-discovery, self-compassion, and to having a deeper understanding of self. You are an interesting and unique individual with highly specific thoughts, memories, and motivations and I am excited about discovering these parts of you with you. Together we will work on developing coping mechanisms, agency, and our therapeutic alliance based off of your personal value system and cultural background.
I am open and excited to working with a wide range of individuals and couples with many different presenting issues. I have experience working with womxn, creatives, the LGBTQIA+ population, as well as children & families. I’m passionate about working with folks struggling with addiction, trauma, grief, anxiety, mood management, disordered eating, sexuality expression, gender expression, and intergenerational trauma. I take a narrative, feminist, Adlerian, and existentialist approach to my clients, believing that personal meaning is paramount, and that everyone creates their story within their larger cultural context paired with their unique life experiences.
I am a graduate student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program at Adler University in Chicago. I previously received my Bachelor’s degrees from Indiana University in English, Theater, and Gender Studies. I am currently involved in birthing-trauma research and am actively involved in social justice activism. I am always ready to recommend a book or self-care activity and like to use my background in the Chicago comedy community to weave humor into sessions when it is appropriate.
