Managing Traumatic Stress

Managing Traumatic Stress

A recent traumatic event can send shockwaves throughout every domain of your life, making it difficult to function on a daily basis without an onslaught of distressing thoughts and sensations. Remote trauma, such as events stemming from childhood, can cause persistent symptoms throughout the lifespan if these experiences have never been properly addressed and processed in a safe space.  The impact of trauma on a person may take the form of sexual dysfunction, emotional turmoil, sleep disruption, depression, or avoidance.

While it is impossible to “erase” a traumatic memory, working with a trauma-informed therapist can make coping with these symptoms more manageable, and decrease the intensity of the symptoms over time.  Techniques such as grounding, exposure, distress tolerance, and re-storying the trauma narrative are effective methods for facilitating the healing process.

Art Therapy is especially effective in the treatment of trauma because trauma is encoded visually in the brain.  Utilizing art-making can create a safe space to slowly explore thoughts and emotions non- verbally with your therapist before you are ready to articulate the details of the traumatic event.
