Adolescence is a time of significant identity formation and exploration of limits. Many teens and young adults turn to their peers for guidance and turn away from their parents or caregivers. Communication between teens and adults is particularly challenging, creating a high potential for conflict and misunderstandings in the home. In teen therapy sessions, we work with adolescents in order to help them better understand relationships and patterns of behavior. Decision making, identity, control and empowerment, and cause and effect relationships are discussed at length. Parents are often invited to some sessions to work on conflict resolution and effective communication.

Commonly discussed issues in teen therapy may include:

  • Processing divorce
  • School performance
  • Blended families
  • Risky behavior
  • Self-harm
  • Thoughts of suicide
  • Bullying
  • Emotional regulation
