Coping with Holiday Stress
While the holidays can often be a time of experiencing joy, relaxation, and quality time with loved ones, it can also be a source of stress for many. It’s possible to experience mixed feelings related to the holidays – for example, perhaps you are excited to join in for celebrations but also struggle with anxiety about the social interactions to come. Or maybe you are anticipating feelings of loneliness this holiday season. If you are struggling with stress about the upcoming holidays, you are not alone. Here are some tips on coping with the stress:
1. Practice mindfulness. If you are feeling overwhelmed, practice bringing your attention to the present moment. You can practice mindfulness anytime by checking in with yourself, noticing your feelings, and observing your thoughts in a nonjudgmental way. Practice taking a few deep breaths to reset when you feel stressed.
2. Connect with trusted supports. Who do you have in your life to uplift and encourage you? Embracing the positive, fulfilling relationships in your life and fostering meaningful connection with people can be an essential way to help cope with stressors.
3. Engage in self-care. What type of self-care feels rejuvenating to you? It can be easy to get swept up in the hustle and bustle busyness of the holidays, but it’s essential to take time to care for yourself too.
4. Participate in activities that feel enjoyable. Whether it’s engaging in holiday-specific rituals or simply spending time doing things you enjoy, allowing space for play, fun, and connection can be a great way to ease stress.
5. Set realistic expectations. It’s easy for us to envision how a “perfect” holiday celebration would go, but often times, we are setting ourselves up for disappointment when we strive for perfection. Focus on what you value most this holiday season (maybe fun, connection, rejuvenation, quality time, etc.), and practice embracing the moments that do align with your values.
